What is the "Name my Phone" feature?
"Name my Phone" was recently developed to address your mobile needs, and make your domain name more valuable. You can now set-up each domain name with a cell phone, pager or other connected device supporting phone messaging (email gateways). You will be able to have more than one device per domain name in the future.
This feature allows you to have your phone set-up as a host to your domain name (i.e. phone.myname.com), and will allow anyone going to that internet address to send you a text message. No need to give out new phone numbers every time you change service! Just give people a much easier to remember web address.

How do I set it up?
Setting up your phone is fast and easy. All you need to do is go to the "Control Panel" of the domain name you want to associate your phone with, click on the Service "change" button, and turn on phone messaging. Next you'll need to go to the "configure" section to set-up your phone. Here is a step by step explanation of each entry:

  1. Host Name - Enter the host name that will refer to your phone (i.e. "phone" for phone.myname.com)

  2. Phone Number - Enter the 10 digit phone number of the device area code first, without any spaces or punctuation (ex. 8005551212)

  3. Service Type - Select the service your mobile device uses. If your service is not listed, enter other. You can still use the feature if you know the email address your service company uses to reach your device (Call your mobile service company to find out)

  4. Device Email - Fill this field only if you have selected "other" above. This is where the messages will be sent. The email address is often your10digitphonenumber@myservicecompanymessaging.com.

  5. Site Theme - A nice feature about this service is that you can choose from several different themes to be displayed in the web page people will access to send you a message. Click here to see them.

  6. CC Addresses - Your phone is down, or you want to reply by email to the message you just received. Well, you just need to set-up a cc email address (like your home or work email address) and all those messages will be CC-ed to that address. You can add up to 3 CC email addresses.

Once you have set-up this page and have saved the changes, your phone is ready to go.
Just go to the web address you just set-up (i.e. http://phone.myname.com) send yourself a message to test, and you are done.

Note - make sure that people know to enter the address formatted as mentioned above (http://phone.myname.com), the host is now "phone" (or whatever the host name you have picked: cell, mobile...) not "www".

Are there extra charges associated with this service?
ClaimYourDomainName does not charge fees for the use of this service. It comes free of charge with each Domain Name registration or hosting. The only charges associated with this service might be the ones charged by your mobile service provider either for the text messaging feature, and/or the connection minutes to receive the message, or none at all. Please check with your provider on charges.

What is the counter on the web page?
Most service providers have a character limit on all messages being sent to mobile devices. The maximum amount of characters differs from provider to provider, 100 or 140 being the most common. The counter allows users sending you a message to see how many characters are left before the message gets cut off.

Can I have those messages forwarded to other email addresses?
In the "Name my Phone" settings page of the domain name you are configuring you can add up to 3 CC email addresses.

What service providers are supported?
In essence all service providers are supported if they allow text messaging to phones, and your cell phone has that feature. In our quick set-up drop down menu we have: AT&T Wireless, Nextel, Cingular, Sprint PCS, Verizon, and VoiceStream. For all other providers, you will need to know and enter the email address your provider uses to send you a message. The email address is often your10digitphonenumber@myserviceprovider.com.
